The Joliet Grade School District 86 school board this week unanimously reversed an earlier decision barring Easter week services in the schools.

In a brief meeting Wednesday, board members heard an opinion from their attorney stating that they could be opening themselves up to a lawsuit by denying use of the schools to the Christian Youth Center.

“The attorney said granting the services would make us least liable,” said Glen Marcum, school board president.

For many years the center has held brief services in the schools prior to school opening during Easter week. This year the group sought the use of 15 schools.

But last week board members had voted 3 to 3 to not allow the services, surprising each other and board member Jeff Allen, who has expressed concerns over the services in the past.

Allen joined the full board Wednesday in a vote to to allow the services.
