The wrenching prognosis for imperiled African wildlife is grim and must provide an impetus for an international effort to constructively intervene (Page 1, March 12).

War, poverty, greed and habitat decimation are formidable obstacles to valiant conservation endeavors.

It is increasingly evident that zoos and hospitable sanctuaries are the safest havens for endangered creatures.

Their indigenous environments have been lethally infiltrated by poachers and marauders.

Captivity in humane venues, where a respective species’ natural surroundings are simulated, is safer for wildlife than their perilous, native homelands.

Zoologists, wildlife curators and park rangers have the ingenuity and scientific means to relocate species from areas of danger to oases of peace.
