UPDATE ON MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS: The majority of people with multiple sclerosis will suffer from fatigue from time to time. Like people with narcolepsy, the biological reasons for the fatigue are not well understood, writes Dr. Allen J. Douma, syndicated family health columnist.
EFFECTIVE TREATMENT: A drug effective in treating narcolepsy–modafinil (Provigil)–is also effective in treating fatigue in people with MS. Unfortunately, it also caused side effects such as nervousness, nausea, dry mouth, headache and diarrhea, which were consistent with the side effects observed while testing it on people with narcolepsy.
