Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

I am a military spouse. I have a family of seven, and my husband is an E4. For those who do not know what rank that would be, it is someone who gets paid only $1,390 per month.

Do you think that your family could live on that? Even if you had only four people in your family, could live on that, with the cost of food, a car payment, insurance and now with the price of gas?

Our government is raping our service members. But they still so desperately need more men and women to enlist, because those who are in get out.

You might be thinking that the spouse can work. I did. I tried to work around my husband’s hours. And I have to pay for child care. That would be all of my pay and then some.

So somewhere or sometime, we will have to go back on food stamps. (Yes there is an enormous number of soldiers and their families using the welfare system.) It is not just about the pay. Retirement keeps getting cut. My husband will get only 25 percent of his retirement. Medical benefits change.

I cannot totally complain about the military, though. There are a few good benefits, but they keep getting smaller. The best thing about the military is the opportunity to choose a good job and then get out and make more money so you are not on welfare.
