Angry commuters in Sao Paulo set fire to a train Tuesday morning after it broke down on the outskirts of South America’s biggest city. Nearly 2,000 passengers were on the train when mechanical problems caused it to come to a halt between the low-income districts of Itaquera and Artur Alvim, the press office of the Sao Paulo Metropolitan Train Company reported. Some commuters, angry because they would be late for work, then set fire to three of the train’s six cars, said a train company official who spoke on condition of anonymity. She said no one was injured or arrested. The fire caused $1.14 million damage, the official said. The train was removed from the track three hours later and service returned to normal at about 10:30 a.m.
