Patrick R. Doyle Sr., 71, a 37-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department who once worked a detail at the late Mayor Richard J. Daley’s house, died Friday, March 24, of kidney failure in Christ Hospital and Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Mr. Doyle, of the Southwest Side, was born and raised in the stockyards area where he would later serve as a patrol officer. He dropped out of high school to join the Navy toward the end of World War II and then served in the Pacific in the Korean War. His son Patrick Jr., a patrol officer in the Englewood District, said Mr. Doyle would often recall how he could see Communist guards in North Korean territory from his ship. A year after he returned from the war in 1953, he joined the Chicago Police Department. Years later when he would see the current mayor on television, he would remember a younger Richard M. Daley taking the garbage out as a kid. For 20 years, Mr. Doyle also worked part-time as the custodian of Old St. Patrick’s Church, cleaning it and planting flowers in the garden. He retired in 1991, finishing his career on the City Hall police detail. Other survivors include three daughters, Susan Horn, Margaret Horner and Pamela Doyle; another son, Timothy; and nine grandchildren. Mass will be said at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Gall Catholic Church, 5511 S. Sawyer Ave., Chicago.
