New Jersey’s Martin Brodeur was in goal Friday for an 8-2 rout of the New York Islanders. The win was Brodeur’s 40th of the season to become just the sixth goaltender in NHL history to have two seasons of 40 or more wins. Terry Sawchuk and Jacques Plante each had three 40-win seasons, while Bernie Parent, Ken Dryden and Ed Belfour round out this elite group with two each.
HOT SHOTS
Through Sunday, a record 39 penalty shots have been awarded this season, including seven during the week of January 6-12, the most attempted over a seven-day period. The previous record was established in December of 1934 and matched in December of 1992 when five penalty shots were awarded during a seven-day stretch. The resulting four goals is also an NHL record for most penalty shot goals over a seven-day period.

HEART TO HART
Blues captain Chris Pronger is having a career year on the St. Louis blueline and has emerged as a favorite for not only the Norris trophy as top defenseman but also a leading candidate to win the Hart trophy as the most valuable player. Should Pronger win league MVP honors, he would become just the eighth defenseman in NHL history to capture the Hart trophy and the first since Bobby Orr in 1972. The seven defenders to garner MVP honors are: Herb Gardiner (Montreal, 1927), Eddie Shore (Boston, 1933, 35, 36, 38), Babe Siebert (Montreal, 1937), Ebbie Goodfellow (Detroit, 1940), Tom Anderson (Brooklyn, 1942), Babe Pratt (Toronto, 1944) and Bobby Orr (Boston, 1970-72). %%
