The culinary arts are joining the cultural menu for the young students at Gallery 37 Center for the Arts, 66 E. Randolph St. But the public can get in on the act too. The new teaching facility will usher in a “World Kitchen” cooking series, which will focus on Chicago’s culinary heritage.
The program expands on the “World in a Weekend” program that had been offered at the Chicago Cultural Center, said Jennifer Manning, Gallery 37 Culinary Arts Coordinator. That program, also operated by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, incorporated food topics in larger cultural presentations. Food is the sole focus of the new program.
” `World Kitchen’ is going to bring in all the aspects of Chicago food, and make it available to everybody,” Manning said.
Gallery 37’s teaching kitchen will accommodate about 30 to 50 students. The first class, “Get Into the Kitchen!,” is a four-part series on the basics, from shopping to cooking (6 to 8:30 p.m. April 5, 19, May 3 and 17; $60). A class on fondant and cake decorating will be offered at 10 a.m. April 15 for $15. Future classes include “City BBQ” on June 10 and “Fresh Food from Chicago’s Farmers Markets,” July 22.
