Karrie Webb, now 25, won an LPGA tournament at age 20 before she became a member of the tour. She joined, qualified and announced her arrival by finishing second, first and second in her first three tournaments. She fashioned some amazing credentials, placing in the top three in 10 of her 25 starts in 1996, her rookie year. Her 1999 season–six wins, six seconds, four thirds and 22 top 10s in 25 starts–ranks among the game’s most impressive, yet three months into 2000 leaves rivals wondering just how much more she can accomplish. When she won the Nabisco, it was her fifth victory in six starts this year. The sports world hardly notices. Part of the reason might be her shy public persona. An emotionless mask generally covers her face and even her best shots elicit no more than an almost apologetic wave. Nevertheless, there can be no denying that she plays an outstanding game, and isn’t that what should matter most?
