Steve Kerekes of the Nuclear Power Institute wrote that nuclear energy produces emissions-free electricity that meets approximately 20 percent of U.S. electric energy needs. (Voice, Mar. 15)
There’s a nuclear power plant in Zion producing no electricity because ComEd didn’t want to invest to comply with stricter federal regulatory safety standards.
Now several companies are trying to put pollution-causing peaker power plants in densely populated housing developments.
None of this would be necessary if Zion were put into use.
There would be plenty of electricity for Lake County and adjacent areas.
People like Kerekes need to continue educating our politicians about the need to develop more nuclear energy for electric generation.
