Village President Karen Bushy returned from a recent trip to Springfield with a positive opinion about the direction local government is taking on e-commerce tax issues.
After attending a mayor’s task force meeting, Bushy said she would seek to discuss the matter with Illinois’ two U.S. senators. She said she wants to make sure Sens. Peter Fitzgerald (R-Ill.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) understand local governments’ concerns about the lack of taxation on goods bought over the Internet.
Bushy said more must be done to educate residents on the effects tax-free e-commerce would have on local municipalities, their tax income and the consequential cuts in municipal services.
