After a raucous resident meeting Wednesday night, an overnight parking ban in the Cumberland Estates subdivision was recommended for repeal.

Members of the Des Plaines Engineering Committee, which endorsed the action, said that a squabble between neighbors shouldn’t serve as the basis for an ordinance.

“This isn’t something we can do block by block because of neighbors. Nice people ought to get along with each other and not go out of their way to antagonize each other,” said Ald. Don Smith.

The ban, enacted last December, was put in place after resident Bob Lutzow complained about the numerous cars belonging to his neighbor Bill Trnka that were parked on the 500 block of Concord Lane. Lutzow gathered enough names to pressure the City Council into passing a parking ban in the north side neighborhood from 2 to 6 a.m.

Trnka, in recent weeks, collected 107 signatures asking for a repeal of the ban.

“We have families who have kids who’ve grown up. Now they drive. Now they have cars. . . . Where are they supposed to park?” asked Cumberland Estates resident Cathy Bertolozzi.

Resident Roger Johnson said family members and guests often use the street. “Homeowners here pay a heck of a lot of real estate taxes and I would like the ability to park in the street if I need to,” Johnson said.

The City Council is expected to repeal the parking ban Monday.
