The Rolling Meadows City Council has approved amending a contract to allow Superior Services Inc. of Milwaukee to operate the Rolling Meadows transfer station on Berdnick Street west of Rohlwing Road.

Browning-Ferris Industries now operates the transfer station, but the U.S. Department of Justice ordered the company to divest its interest in the station after their trash-hauling company was bought recently by Allied Waste Industries Inc.

The ruling was ordered in an effort to promote competitive prices for waste removal, according to city staff members.

Under the revised agreement, Superior would pay the city $1 per ton of waste handled at the station, with an adjustment for inflation based on the Consumer Price Index. It also would pay the city about $125,200 a year for handling a minimum of 400 tons daily.

The City Council will vote on whether to allow Superior to increase its quota to 1,000 tons daily after a traffic study determines whether additional trips by the trucks would disrupt traffic and whether the facility can handle the added business.

Browning-Ferris has operated the transfer station since 1998.

Before Superior can operate the station, it must get approval from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.
