Why would Illinois tollway officials consider experiments to temporarily lift toll gates during rush hours (Metro, April 20)? Shouldn’t commuters be encouraged to use the roadways during periods of relatively low use, and find alternative routes or reschedule trips during rush hours? People use highways during rush hours to run errands, visit friends or make trips for purposes other than commuting to work. They could choose to make these trips at times when their presence on the road would not add to congestion, but currently they have little incentive to do so. Lift the gates during off hours. Don’t provide commuters greater incentive to travel during rush hours.
