Not since Chicago hosted the Columbian Exposition more than 100 years ago will this city be so enriched with a reputation for urbanity and refinement as when we host the Chicago Ping-Pong Festival this summer.

Congratulations to Lois Weisberg, Chicago’s first lady of cultural affairs, for initiating this aesthetically enriching appeal to our better nature.

I hope that our hotels will be adequately prepared to accommodate the thousands of expected visitors to Chicago who will be flocking here this summer for the matches.

Nike probably will be issuing a new sneaker designed exclusively for playing Ping-Pong.

Let the games begin.
