The April 24 accident on the McClugage Bridge in Peoria was a terrible tragedy that cost the lives of three workers (“60-foot plunge off Peoria span kills 3 workers,” Page 1, April 25). It is a sad irony that this happened during Worker Safety Week.

As construction season gets under way on Illinois’ roadways, it is worth pausing, literally, to remember the workers who do their jobs only a feet (and sometimes a few inches) from the hurtling rush of 60-m.p.h. traffic.

As road builders, we don’t mind people taking roads for granted.

But please be aware of the men and women who work to give us the mobility and freedom of our roadways.

Slow down and “give ’em a brake.”
