One of the most frustrating things for parents and students is to be denied participation in a high school graduation ceremony because of the lack of a credit or two.

To remedy that,, the board of Orland Park-based Consolidated High School District 230 created a midterm graduation ceremony for students who fail to graduate on time due to special circumstances, such as those lacking one credit because of a serious illness.

The midterm ceremony means they will not have to wait an extra year to walk across a stage to receive their diploma, according to board member Richard Kelly.

Students would graduate in one ceremony for all three district schools–Stagg in Palos Hills, Andrew in Tinley Park and Sandburg in Orland Park.

Last year, 129 students would have been eligible for the mid-year ceremony.
