WINNING STRIKES OUT
Pedro Martinez of the Boston Red Sox struck out 17 Tampa Bay Devil Rays on May 6 and still lost 1-0. It was the 14th time since 1988 that a pitcher has whiffed 15 or more without recording a win. Steve Carlton and Randy Johnson share the distinction of having recorded the most, 19, while still being tagged for a loss. Carlton struck out 19 New York Mets on September 15, 1969, losing, 4-3, as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals. Johnson fanned 19 Oakland A’s on July 24, 1997, and lost 4-1, as a Seattle Mariner. Johnson has struck out 15 or more without notching a victory five times.
HIGH ANXIETY
The Milwaukee Brewers recently released Jaime Navarro and if he does not pitch again in the majors this season, he will set a big-league single-season record for the highest ERA (12.54) by a pitcher with five or more losses.
HIS BROTHER’S KEEPER
First baseman Jason Giambi of the Oakland A’s seems to like having younger brother Jeremy around. Jeremy started the season on the big-league roster but was sent down to Class AAA for 11 days before being recalled on May 5. When Jeremy is on the roster, Jason has batted .345 with 11 homers and 36 RBIs. But while his brother was banished to the minors, Jason batted only .212 with four homers and 12 RBIs. %%
