REVOLUTIONARY ROAD
By Richard Yates
Introduction by Richard Ford
Vintage, 337 pages, $14
Anyone overly nostalgic for the 1950s should read this novel first. Originally published in 1961, “Revolutionary Road” vividly presents the vagaries of life in 1955 suburbia. Frank Wheeler and his wife, April, are 29, living with their two children in a Connecticut bedroom community called Revolutionary Hill Estates. The community appears cohesive and pleasantly removed from the din of New York City, but soon the couple’s inner turmoil leads to a tragedy.
