Edmonton Oilers coach Kevin Lowe resigned from the club amid speculation he will join his former boss Glen Sather with the New York Rangers.
The resignation was a formality that does not necessarily mean Lowe will leave the Oilers. Negotiations between Lowe and the Oilers have stalled, leading to the resignation Monday that was announced Wednesday.
Lowe exercised a contract clause that allowed him to resign in the event Sather stepped down as general manager. Sather did so May 19 and took the same position with the Rangers just over two weeks later.
College football: Sanford “Sandy” Stephens, a former All-America quarterback who led Minnesota to its only Rose Bowl victory, has died of an apparent heart attack at the age of 59. Stephens was the 1961 winner of the Tribune’s Silver Football Award, given to the Big Ten’s MVP.
Horse racing: Arlington’s top jockey, Mark Guidry, led five horses to the winner’s circle. Guidry’s feat was the first five-win day on the Chicago circuit this year.
College basketball: Former Oregon State coach Eddie Payne says he has filed notice that he plans to sue the school for $2.4 million. Payne said the school reneged on an April 1999 oral agreement to extend his contract and now is refusing to give him the benefits in his contract.
Soccer: Late substitute Horacio Sanchez scored two goals in three minutes to open up a close game as Mexico beat South Africa 4-2 in the U.S. Cup. Mexico (1-0-1) faces the U.S. (1-0-1) Sunday.
Colleges: Athletic participation at NCAA member schools increased by more than 20,000 last year, with the biggest gains in women’s sports, according to the organization’s annual participation report.
