An environmental group Tuesday honored the Hinsdale Village Board for its early endorsement of legislation seeking to end some coal-fired power plants’ exemptions from modern emissions standards.

The Illinois Environmental Council is pressing for the 30-year-old federal Clean Air Act to apply to all power plants. Some plants received a “grandfather” exemption, and they continue to cause excessive air pollution that poses a health threat, according to the group.

About 60 governmental bodies representing more than 3 million people in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will Counties have signed on to the Stand Up/Save Lives Campaign. But Hinsdale deserved special recognition because it was among the first to support the campaign when it did so last June, said project coordinator Maureen Headington.
