The Illinois Supreme Court has appointed Stephen Culliton, who has served as a DuPage County associate judge for 2 years, as a full circuit judge.

Culliton, 55, of Bloomingdale, served as Illinois Atty. Gen. Jim Ryan’s chief of staff from 1994 to 1998. Previously he was a defense lawyer.

As an associate judge, he has presided over a Wheaton misdemeanor courtroom. With his promotion, he is expected to transfer to a civil courtroom.

Culliton replaces Judge Michael Galasso, who was on assignment to the state Appellate Court for the past year but recently was appointed permanently to that court. Galasso and Culliton were recommended for their new positions by Illinois Supreme Court Justice S. Louis Rathje.
