I am a long-time resident and employee in the Lakeview neighborhood, specifically, near Belmont, Clark and Sheffield. In all my years of attending the wonderful street festivals, I was extremely disappointed to find that recently, the Belmont-Sheffield festival required a $5 “donation,” when I thought that these street festivals were supposed to be free. For my $5, I would get nothing except the opportunity to go into the gated area and spend more of my money on food, drink, art work, etc.
I am a single mother with three children. I am hardworking, I pay my taxes and I pay my mortgage for my house which I purchased in Chicago. Aren’t the street festivals supposed to be for all people, not just people who can afford to attend?
