Esther Thatcher (Voice of the people, June 2) seems upset that the state of Wisconsin recently legalized hunting mourning doves. I’ve got news for the lady: We’ve been hunting them right here in Illinois for quite a few years. She asks, “This is a sport? Why hunters would even desire to kill these peaceful doves is beyond me.”

No, ma’am, not a sport. It’s a way of putting meat on the table. If you’d ever tasted dove stew (delicious!) you’d understand our desire to kill them very well.

Too many city and suburban folks who only see meat in the supermarket, neatly packaged with all the blood, guts, and hair or feathers long removed, tend to forget that animals and birds must die to provide it.
