Do we hold sacred the Cold War doctrine of “mutual assured destruction,” (M.A.D.) or are we serious about abolishing nuclear weapons?

Clearly, Clinton is confused.

He needs to stop the MADness, abandon plans for a missile defense system, and get serious about negotiating treaties to rid our planet of nuclear weapons. Together the U.S. and Russia maintain some 13,000 nuclear warheads. It takes only a few minutes to fire them all.

Our leaders tend to shrink from bold and long-term constructive, healthy thinking. Instead they tend to adopt short-term perspectives, which keep them in office or make foolish daily headlines.

They need to make better choices, not expedient cowardly ones.
