My father-in-law, Stanley Kozar, died June 5 after a long and productive life. It is especially poignant that his death came on the eve of the anniversary of the most memorable moment in his life.
On June 6, 1944, as a frightened 23-year-old member of the fabled 1st Infantry Division (the Big Red One) he “hit the beach” at Normandy only 20 minutes after the first wave had landed.
Unlike many of his comrades, he survived that terrible day to return and father five children, including my wife.
The D-Day anniversary hopefully made us reflect on the sacrifices of all our veterans, living and dead.
Every American should seriously consider donating something to the World War II veterans’ memorial now being built in Washington, D.C.
