Unlike federal and county per-gallon taxes, the Illinois sales tax is on a percentage basis, so that as the price of a gallon goes up, so does the tax on it. State government is reaping a windfall from motorists’ misery and is actually accelerating the price increase. If Illinois must charge sales tax on gasoline, it should apply it on a per-gallon, not a per-dollar, basis.
Even if government can’t do anything about high prices, it shouldn’t be part of the problem.
