Parents who are upset with a recent decision to bus their Cary School District 26 kindergarteners to a school across town beginning in September asked school board members Monday to reconsider and keep neighborhoods together.
Hillhurst subdivision residents learned that those children who are to start kindergarten in the fall will not attend Oak Knoll Elementary School, which is a few blocks from their homes.
Instead, the district plans to have the children bused across town to Deer Path Elementary School in an effort to maintain small class sizes throughout the district.
According to Supt. Tim Kelly, the switch was necessary because kindergarten enrollment figures did not support four sections of kindergarten in Oak Knoll. The Hillhurst students, along with one Oak Knoll kindergarten teacher, will be at Deer Path next year and possibly the following school year as well.
Board President Fran Roll said the construction of a junior high and creation of a 5th- and 6th-grade attendance center will alleviate some of the problems so similar busing situations won’t again be necessary.
