I read with interest Clarence Page’s June 7 column on home schooling. I, too, was impressed with the number of home-schooled children receiving recognition in competitions, such as the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee. My husband and I have chosen a different path that we feel gives our children the best of both worlds. Our children are schooled both in a traditional school setting and at home. Where is it written that children stop learning when they leave the school grounds? We have tried to teach our children that learning is a lifelong experience, and they need to take advantage of all the opportunities available to them. By being part of the public school system, our children have the advantage of participating in the excellent school activities offered there, such as band, choir, computer club or athletics.
Mr. Page is right on the mark when he states that parents are the important ingredient in a child’s education and that educational support systems begin at home.
