Roberta K. McCabe, 57, of Buffalo Grove and Delray Beach, Fla., a homemaker, was a kindergarten teacher in Chicago in the late 1960s and a substitute teacher at St. Mary Catholic School, Buffalo Grove, from 1977 to 1985. Mrs. McCabe, a Chicago native, died Sunday, June 11, in Northwest Community Hospital, Arlington Heights, of complications from heart disease. Mrs. McCabe received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Mundelein College, Chicago, now part of Loyola University Chicago, in 1965. After graduation she taught kindergarten for two years in a public school on Chicago’s West Side. Mrs. McCabe was a former activities director, for three years in the late 1980s, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Buffalo Grove. She served as president of the social club at Tropic Bay Condo Association, Delray Beach, for the last two years. “She was basically a second mother to all the friends of her five children,” said her daughter Margaret M. “She was giving and open. Our house was never locked to anyone. She was the most giving person I knew. She had many friends. She was very well-loved. Whoever she came into contact with she touched in a way they’ll never forget.” Other survivors include two sons, James L. and Joseph B.; two more daughters, Catherine M. Maskalunas and Therese A.; and four grandsons. A visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Lauterburg & Oehler Funeral Home, 2000 E. Northwest Highway, Arlington Heights. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary Catholic Church, 75 N. Buffalo Grove Rd., Buffalo Grove.
