After reading Gerald D. Skoning’s views (“Facing up to bad idea: Regionalism and the Chicago discount,” Commentary, June 8), I wonder if he’s aware that “a price discrimination war” has already been started in the suburbs. Many suburban attractions offer discounts to their residents (at pools and water-parks, for example) or completely deny non-residents access altogether (some suburban beaches, for instance). I certainly do not wish to add to “the forces balkanizing our region,” but I will gladly accept discounts at any of our Chicago museums, treasures which I use on a regular basis. I think our high Chicago property taxes should be good for more than poor schools and wrought-iron fences.
