I was surprised and saddened to hear that the Tribune’s artist, thinker and all-around all-American wise guy, Jeff MacNelly, had died.
Although I rarely agreed with his politics, he nevertheless had the ability to bring me to an understanding of his point of view. Politics or no, when something is genuinely funny, one is still provoked to laughter, and Mr. MacNelly was the genuine deal when it came to being funny.
A superb and expressive draftsman who was also unusually gifted with imagination, insight and intelligence–I shall miss him.
