Lydia E. Kerchal, 78, of Elgin, a homemaker, retired in 1986 after 20 years of service as a volunteer Welcome Wagon hostess in northwest Elgin. Mrs. Kerchal, who was born in Ord, Neb., died Monday, June 19, in Sherman Hospital, Elgin. “She was a very devoted and giving person, not only to her family, but to other people that she met,” said her husband, Raymond. Other survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Roach; a son, Dennis; sisters Dorothy Stoddard and Betty Schmidt; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday in Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., Elgin.
