The McHenry County Conservation District will seek state financing to develop 525 acres near U.S. Highway 14 and Deep Cut Road in rural Woodstock.
The district board has approved preliminary plans for the former Woodstock Hunt Club and the Woodstock Center; two sites that are contingent and divided by Paulsen Road.
The work will cost an estimated $300,000. The district will apply for a $150,000 grant through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Awards will be announced this fall.
Planned additions include a campground, walking-trail system, a 3-mile horse trail, more parking and an observation deck overlooking a small lake.
An entrance road will be moved on U.S. 14 and a secondary access road will be built off Paulsen Road.
A pool and tennis courts, which are in disrepair on the west side, will be removed and replaced.
