There has been some discussion in the media lately about the positive influence pets have on health and longevity. It’s true. Having a pet can be a wonderful antidote to stress, in turn leading to reductions in blood pressure and heart rate. This, however, will work only if you love animals.

As a health professional and animal lover, I want people to consider the following. A pet represents an enormous responsibility and requires commitment. Pets can be costly and a lot of work. If you don’t love animals and you do mind the extra work and expense involved, a pet will only add stress to your life.

And please don’t get a pet just to try it. The shelters are overflowing with pets that were given up or abandoned by their owners.

That said, if you have the time, the money, the place, the love and patience it takes to acquire and maintain a pet, this could enhance your health.
