A sheriff’s deputy who stopped a taxi on Interstate Highway 70 couldn’t help but wonder why a California cab was in Kansas.

It turns out it was just carrying a passenger home from Los Angeles to Cincinnati, a 2,200-mile trip, for an agreed-upon fare of $2,500, authorities said. The taxi might have been allowed to go its way but for the 10 pounds of marijuana the deputy found inside a television set the passenger was transporting.

The discovery last week landed the 20-year-old male passenger in the Shawnee County, Kan., Jail.

The cabbie apparently was unaware of the marijuana and was released with his taxi.
