A 70-year-old employee of a Northwest Side liquor store was hospitalized in serious condition Saturday after being beaten with baseball bats by two masked men attempting to rob the store.
The beating occurred after the employee rushed to the aid of the store’s owner, who was being beaten by two intruders who entered the A and E Food and Liquor store in the 3400 block of North Albany Avenue just after midnight Friday, police said.
The assailants, who could not get the cash register open, fled the store without any money, apparently after hearing noise from outside the building, police said.
The employee was in serious condition Saturday night at Illinois Masonic Medical Center, a nursing supervisor said. The store owner was treated for minor bruises at another local hospital and released.
