As a Social Security recipient and an American worker, I was rankled by “Sensible Social Security plan” (Voice of the people, June 22) by Ralph Gilbert. The letter lauds George Bush’s “modest” proposal, encouraging younger workers to direct some of their Social Security taxes to the Wall Street profiteers.
Those “working people with assets” cited by Mr. Gilbert are free to spend as much of their own funds as they wish on private investments. As one who drives a perfectly adequate 5-year-old, subcompact car, looks for vacation bargains and frequents garage sales, I say the bloodsuckers are already making enough of a profit at my expense.
If public programs like Social Security are deficient, repair them within the public sector. That’s why we pay taxes. Don’t give our tax money over to the profiteers so they can drive their luxury cars and earn more frequent-flyer points at public expense.
