Orange County officials want their county to be the first to use a new state law allowing government units to post the 10 Commandments in public buildings.

They plan to display them at the county courthouse in Paoli at a minute past midnight Friday, when the new law goes into effect. State Rep. Jerry Denbo, who sponsored the legislation in the House, plans to be there.

“They wanted to be the first ones in America to legally post the 10 Commandments,” Denbo (D-French Lick) said Tuesday.

The law, enacted overwhelming support, allows governments to post the commandments if they also display other documents of historical significance.

The Indiana Civil Liberties Union already has sued the state over plans to place a monument inscribed with the commandments on the lawn of the Statehouse. The lawsuit claims the monument will violates the U.S. Constitution by representing establishment of religion by the state.
