MIRIAM’S SONG: By Miriam Mathabane, as told to Mark Mathabane
Simon & Schuster, 315 pages, $25
Miriam Mathabane grew up in a black township of South Africa toward the end of apartheid. This book, a memoir, was told to her older brother Mark Mathabane, author of “Kaffir Boy.” The details of Miriam’s existence are startling–the tiny family shack was rat-infested, and many townspeople suffered from domestic abuse–and Miriam’s narrative voice is compelling. The most dramatic sections of the book concern the violent, anti-government uprisings in Miriam’s town of Alexandra.
