I enjoyed John McCarron’s July 17 column. But I don’t see why anyone would want to preserve Maxwell Street. Although I have fond memories of friends I made there and all that I learned there, the area was basically a slum.
I worked summers, weekends and evenings at the 12th Street Store for my last two years in high school in the early 1950s, moving supplies back and forth on Halsted–right through Maxwell Street. I don’t see the historic or artistic value of the area–simply a by-gone era where people were trying to make a quick buck or get a good deal.
