According to the Motorcycle Industry Council:

– There were 6.5 million motorcycles in use nationwide as of 1997.

– Cruiser style motorcycles comprise 54 percent of all street bike sales. There were 190,000 cruisers sold in 1999, up from 60,000 in 1991.

– California, Texas, New York, Florida and Ohio represented 35 percent of all motorcycles in use as of 1997.

– California has 2.9 motorcycles for every 100 people.

– Nationwide the figure is 2.5 bikes for every 100 people.

– Sales of new motorcycles rose 31 percent in the first quarter of 2000 from a year earlier.

– The typical motorcyclist is a 38-year-old family man who has attended college and makes an average of $44,250 per year. More than 33 percent of today’s riders make more than $50,000 annually.

– Women represent 8.2 percent of total motorcycle riders–up from 6.4 percent in 1990. Also, 58 percent of the women riders are married, while 59 percent of male riders are married.

– On riding apparel (vests, shirts, bandanas, etc), women spend an average of $317 per year and men spend $255.
