I have read with great interest the many articles about Brazil and now Mexico by Laurie Goering. Part of the reason for my interest is that I have traveled to the two countries numerous times, to Brazil and Mexico on business, where I have many good and respected colleagues, and with my wife to various parts of Mexico on vacation. I’m writing to compliment Laurie Goering’s “Mexico’s Fox has big ambitions, much savvy, many hurdles, President-elect vows to uproot epidemic graft” (News, July 9). I was especially impressed with the efforts she made to interview qualified observers, and with her observations and insight regarding the dilemma confronting the Institutional Revolutionary Party or PRI–maintaining power and its attributes while showing some consideration for the masses.
