I was stunned to see the term “Rust Belt” applied to the Midwest in a front-page Tribune headline (“Door to White House is through Rust Belt,” July 23). For the largest newspaper in the Midwest to use the term is saddening.

At a time when Midwestern cities like Chicago and Ann Arbor are spawning numerous high-tech startups and venture capital firms, at a time when even old-time factories are filled with robotics and computerized automation, the term “Rust Belt” is misleading and damaging. So please, for the economic development and general perception of our great Midwestern region, use a nicer term in the futurewhen referring to the Midwest.
