Here are tips for caring for furniture and other household items while in storage:
– For wood furniture, choose old blankets over plastic dropcloths as a cover because any dust that gets between the plastic and wood can rub the finish from the piece.
– Stacked, bulging boxes can tip over easily; partially filled boxes tend to collapse. To guard against this, fill boxes tightly with bubble wrap and packing paper to fill empty spaces.
– Apply a few drops of machine oil on clean surfaces before storing bicycles and other metal items, to retard rust.
– When packing dishes, plates, platters and saucers should be stored vertically. Nest cups and bowls. A layer of packing material should be placed on the bottom of the box first and one over the top before closing the box.
– Any closet can be more efficient if you install closet organizers. Check with your landlord before attaching shelving to walls.
