So, 50 years after President Truman integrated the armed forces, some GOP representatives at the Republican National Convention are now trying to sell the concept of “inclusion.” One radio commentator even noticed that Colin Powell received a smattering of applause when he spoke on behalf of affirmative action, as opposed to four years ago when he was roundly booed. The GOP is really making some progress!
And while some may applaud Powell for trying to lead the GOP out of the wilderness, personally, I was deeply angered. After all, what did he do about embracing patriotic and proud gays and lesbians who wanted to openly serve America in the military? It is apparent that the party is simply pandering for votes.
As with most makeovers, the GOP’s conversion to inclusion is only skin-deep, and designed to hide some deep flaws.
