In his Aug. 6 column, Clarence Page concluded by stating, “After all, Democrats were compassionate before compassion became cool.” Tell me, was it compassionate for Mayor Richard J. Daley to build those horrendous public high-rise prisons that destroyed the lives of thousands of good, decent, hard-working, caring people?
Was it compassion that destroyed the school system by which black children could get a decent education?
And wasn’t it Republicans who pushed through the Civil Rights Act, which Democrats voted against?
To me blacks in this country are heroes–surviving and succeeding against many odds–in spite of the Democratic Party, not because of it.
