Serena Williams set up a title match with top-ranked Martina Hingis in the du Maurier Open, beating Arantxa Sanchez Vicario 6-2, 6-4 Saturday in Montreal.
Hingis, the defending champion, defeated Conchita Martinez of Spain 6-3, 6-2. Hingis is seeking her fifth tournament victory this year, but has only won three times in seven matches against Williams.
“My advantage is that I’m quicker,” Hingis said. “I don’t carry that much muscle and weight around. But I have to be the first to attack, not her.”
– Top-seeded Andre Agassi played his strongest match of the tournament and routed 14th-seed David Prinosil of Germany 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the final of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington.
In Sunday’s final he’ll face second-seeded Alex Corretja, who beat third-seeded Nicolas Kiefer 7-6 (2), 6-2.
– Gustavo Kuerten found a way to beat Lleyton Hewitt in the RCA Championships semifinals in Indianapolis.
The top-seeded Brazilian, playing Hewitt for the first time, fell behind 5-2 in the first set before he gained control of the match and finished with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over the No. 5 seed.
Kuerten won the last five games of the first set, then repeated the effort in the second set by holding serve in the fourth game and breaking Hewitt in the fifth game.
Kuerten will play third-seeded Marat Safin, who defeated seventh-seeded Tim Henman 7-5, 6-4.
