Two things I hate are ignorance and demagoguery. Mayor Richard M. Daley’s Aug. 20 letter supporting so-called “hate crime” laws is an example of both.

A crime is a crime; the motivation is irrelevant. Punishment should be determined by immediate factors, such as the degree of brutality, injury or damage to the victim, etc.

Demagoguery in this age of mass communications consists of finding out what the opinion-maker’s position is and adding a loud “me too.” That’s exactly what the mayor has done.
