I picked up the Tribune and read an article about stem cell research, in which unborn embryonic human beings must be killed for their highly sought-after stem cells (“U.S. to pay for embryo stem cell research,” News, Aug. 24).

Then I picked up the business section, a title catching my eye: “McDonald’s seeks to curtail cruelty to hens.”

I can’t help but think how ironic it is that the value of human life has become so diminished that its worth is not only below that of endangered species, but now, also, barnyard hens.
